đșđ„ The Tale of the Workshop That Definitely Didnât Explode
A Tavern Tale Told Twice â Badly by Harl, and Correctly by Skivvit (according to Skivvit)
The fire was crackling low in the hearth when a traveler pointed toward the back window, where the faint outline of a new stone outbuilding could be seen through the mist.
âWas that always there?â they asked.
Every regular froze.
Because Harl â boots braced, beard rings chiming, mug in hand â let out a long, theatrical sigh.
âOh aye,â he rumbled, lifting his drink. âThat would be Skivvitâs new workshop. On account of the old one beinâââ
âFUNCTIONALLY RECONFIGURED,â Skivvit shouted from three tables away, goggles perched on his forehead like they were ready to spring off and start their own life elsewhere.
Harl ignored him.
ââutterly obliterated.â
âIt wasnât obliterated!â Skivvit protested, scampering over. âIt was⊠illuminated. Briefly. Intensely. BEAUTIFULLY.â
Harl took a sip.
âIt exploded.â
Skivvit threw his hands up. âSEE? This is why dwarves shouldnât be allowed adjectives.â
đș Harl Begins the Tale (Badly, According to Skivvit)
âPicture this,â Harl said, leaning forward, voice dropping to that gravelly whisper that made the whole tavern lean in.
âItâs night. Quiet. Peaceful. Not a creature stirrinâ. Not even Ashwhisker glarinâ judgment at the moon. And thenââ
He slapped the table so hard three mugs jumped.
ââKA-THOOOOM.â
Skivvit groaned into his hands.
âHarl, that is not what it sounded like. It was much more of a FWOOOOM-wrrrraaaAAAHHHHâchk-CHKâPANG situation.â
âAnyway,â Harl went on, âSkivvit comes shootinâ out of his workshop like a halfling launched from a trebuchet.â
Skivvit gasped. âI RAN OUT WITH PURPOSE!â
âYe ran out with eyebrows on fire.â
Skivvit gently patted his singed hairline. ââŠscientific cost.â
âThe ladâs detection contraptionââ
âTHE VEIL-FLUX-INTERDIMENSIONAL-MULTI-AXIAL-MAGI-METERâąâ
ââstarts shrieking like a banshee with a toothache,â Harl said. âThen every candle, lantern, and rune-bloody-stone in the place flares bright enough to make the gods blink.â
âAnd THAT part,â Skivvit interrupted proudly, âwas intentional.â
âIt was not intentional,â Harl deadpanned. âYou screamed âNONONO ITâS NOT SUPPOSED TO DO THATâ loud enough that Thalia rolled out oâ bed armed with her frying pan.â
Skivvit winced. âOkay⊠that part might not have been intentional.â
đ„ Skivvit Jumps In (Because He Canât Let Harl Ruin His Art)
âLook,â Skivvit said, hopping up onto a stool for height. âMy old workshop didnât explode-explode. It merely experienced a rapid structural decompression caused by an unexpectedly enthusiastic Veil-energy surge.â
âBlew the roof clean off,â Harl added.
âARTISTICALLY.â
âAnd the walls.â
âREDUNDANT.â
âAnd ye landed in the trout barrel.â
Skivvit pointed dramatically. âThat trout had NO RIGHT being that judgmental.â
He cleared his throat.
âAhem. ANYWAY. The important part is: Thalia said I needed a workshop that would be âless flammable,â âless collapsible,â and âless likely to ignite the Lodge itself.ââ
Harl grunted. âYe forgot âless shrieky.ââ
âOh, she DEFINITELY said shrieky,â Belvik called from the corner.
âRUDE,â Skivvit huffed. âMy devices do not shriek. They express concern acoustically⊠which I'd think youâd appreciate, Belvik!â
đȘš The Birth of the Stone Workshop
âSo,â Skivvit went on, âThalia asked the Lodge for help⊠something like âgods help usâ or some such. And the Lodge â beautiful, mysterious, semi-sentient architectural wonder that it is â decided I deservedâŠâ
He spread his arms wide.
ââŠAN UPGRADE.â
Outside, through the fog, the stone shed glowed with warm amber light, sturdy and patient, as if resigned to its fate.
âNow itâs fireproof! Shock-resistant! Reality-stabilized! And warded against interdimensional leakage!â
Harl muttered, âUntil he finds a way around all that.â
Skivvit beamed. âOh, I will.â
đ» The Tavern Reacts
The room laughed â the kind you feel in your ribs, warm and communal.
Someone raised a mug.
âTo Skivvitâs Workshop 2.0! May it last longer than the last one!â
Skivvit lifted his own mug high.
âMay it last EXACTLY AS LONG AS SCIENCE REQUIRES.â
Harl clinked his mug against Skivvitâs.
âAye. And may the gods preserve us all when Workshop 3.0 comes around.â
đŻïž Final Note Found Tacked to the Tavern Board (in Skivvitâs handwriting)
DO NOT ENTER MY NEW WORKSHOP WITHOUT PERMISSION.
(Unless you have snacks.)
(Or need something fixed.)
(Or if you hear a suspicious humming and want to bring me the fire extinguisher.)
(Actuallyâjust knock first.)
